South America Knitting Cruise (Nov 2018) ~ Knitting Cruises Description

14-Day South America Knitting Cruise w/ Gwen Bortner (November 19- December 3, 2018)

We call South America the fiber-lovers', nature-lovers', food-lovers' and scenery-lovers' dream destination! Here you'll find luxury fiber and color inspiration everywhere you look. Additionally, you can taste sizzling steaks, savor fine wines, see spectacular scenery, walk among penguins and see some of the most sensual dancing in the world. Start your trip with an optional 2-night package so you can explore Santiago, learn about South American alpaca farming at the Quintessence Alpaca Farm and tour one of Chile's famous vineyards for a wine tasting. Upon embarking on Holland America's ms Zaandam you'll cruising around the Horn and the stunning coastlines of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay before ending your adventure in the cosmopolitan cities of Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

South America is home to yarn companies producing some very gorgeous yarn including Quintessence, Araucania, Manos and, of course, Malabrigo. South America yarn producers have achieved success by using traditional methods for dying to showcase their color expertise. Yarn shopping and fiber activities abound on this itinerary but some of the main fiber attractions on this cruise include visiting the Quintessence Alpaca Farm outside Santiago, meeting the fiber artists at the Lanas Chucao cooperative in Puerto Montt, Chile, visiting a 35,000 acre sheep farm where you'll also enjoy the most popular penguin tour in South America in the Falkland islands, seeing yarn dyed at Malabrigo, learning about Manos del Uruguay and shopping to your heart's content in the Buenos Aires yarn district.

The onboard education program includes a range of classes taught by Gwen Bortner. Learn such popular techniques as shadow knitting, colorwork, knitting in the round, argyle, stranded knitting, and mosaic knitting as well as learning about the secrets of Andean knitting and working with hand-dyed yarns. Whether you take classes or just come along for the fun, this cruise is going to be a trip to remember with incredible scenery, amazing people and experiences unique only to the Patagonia region of South America.
