Bergen, Norway

Introduction

Bergen is the gateway to the Norwegian Fjords. This beautiful coastal city enjoys a mild climate and very little snow as a result of the jet stream. Bergen is a World Heritage Site that warmly welcomes all visitors. Bergen offers a variety of cultural events, performing arts and international festivals. Just being in Bergen is a party in itself because of the throngs of people who come to enjoy the outdoor cafes, fine food, beautiful scenery and good beer.

Travelers love Bergen because it is one of the least intimidating, relaxed and most friendly cities in Europe. As with other Norwegian ports of call Bergen offers the highest quality designer products in the world including wool sweaters, furs, leathers, linens and of course, troll dolls. Bergen is a pristine, friendly and beautiful seaside port that is very rich in history and art.

Port Orientation

The cruise port is within walking distance of the town center and most of the city's main points of interest. The cruise terminal does have a few amenities and within walking distance you will find everything you need. There is free internet available at the public library in the center of town.

Transportation

Walking is the best means of transportation and there is great public transport as well. If you plan to explore on your own a great value is the "Bergen Card" available at the railway station, the cruise ship terminal, tourist information centers and some hotels. A 24-hour adult card sells for NOK 190 ($37.52), and gives the holder free transportation on all city buses and free admission or deep discounts to most of the major attractions.

Sightseeing

Whether you are looking to spend time at the medieval looking old wharf district which houses shops and eateries, or enjoy a freshly caught lunch at The Bergen Fish Market, you can find entertainment by taking in the local sights. Close by you will find the Bergen Aquarium which is accessed by ferry and the Bergen Art Museum which is very much like the Smithsonian Institution with groups of separate museums. Atop the peak of Mt. Floyen, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Bergen as well as other beautiful vistas, enjoy lunch, shop at the gift shop or hike the miles of trails on the Floibanen Funicular.
