Introduction

Ushuaia, Argentina is the southernmost city in the World and offers everything from the sea, mountains and forests. Surrounded by lakes, bays, forests and glaciers this extremely colorful town is flanked by the Beagle Channel and the Andes mountains. The climate in Ushuaia is far from what you would expect that close to Antartica. Unlimited sporting opportunities abound in Ushuaia. Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), a stretch of water containing many islands, some belonging to Argentina and some to Chile. Puerto Williams is claimed by Chile as the southernmost town in the world. Indeed it is further south than Ushuaia but with less than 2,500 residents, it does not quality as a city.

In 1884, Ushuaiia was founded and in 1896 it was designated as a penal colony, as it was considered too remote for most people. The jail, completed in 1902 and closed in 1947, still stands and is now a museum with a lecture room and movie theater which is used for various events.
