Introduction

Ushuaia, Argentina is the southernmost city in the World and offers everything from the sea, mountains and forests. Surrounded by lakes, bays, forests and glaciers this extremely colorful town is flanked by the Beagle Channel and the Andes mountains. The climate in Ushuaia is far from what you would expect that close to Antartica. Unlimited sporting opportunities abound in Ushuaia. From mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, climbing, diving and sport fishing, there is something for everyone. If you would rather, you can enjoy a day trip along the Beagle Channel and Lapataia Bay in Tierra del Fuego National Park and take in the spectacular sights of southern Argentina.

Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire), a stretch of water containing many islands, some belonging to Argentina and some to Chile. Puerto Williams is claimed by Chile as the southernmost town in the world. Indeed it is further south than Ushuaia but with less than 2,500 residents, it does not quality as a city.

In 1884, Ushuaiia was founded and in 1896 it was designated as a penal colony, as it was considered too remote for most people. The jail, completed in 1902 and closed in 1947, still stands and is now a museum with a lecture room and movie theater which is used for various events.

The cruise ship terminal is located in the center of town which is a short walk to the main shopping street.

Transportation

Walking is the best way to get around since the city is small and the dining and shopping is located close by. However, if you do wish to hire a taxi, you can hire one at the end of the dock.

Sightseeing

The Ushuaia Prison Museum offers one the chance to see the actual cells of incarcerated prisoners as well as the portion of the prison that is now a Marine Museum. Within two hours of Ushuaia, the Tierra del Fuego National Park offers unsurpassed beauty, from its mountains, glaciers, pristine lakes and rivers to some incredible viewpoints. Straddling the border between Argentina and Chile, this National Park offers many hiking trails along rivers, to lookout points for views of the bay and to the Black Lagoon. If you are looking for Penguins, try a sailing excursion through Lapataia Bay to the Hammer Island Pengin Rookery. There you will see the glorious Magellenic Penguins in their natural environment.

Once leaving Ushuaia, the Ship will cruise through the Beagle Channel, which is a strait separating islands of the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, in extreme southern South America. Along the northwest arm of Beagle Channel, you will enjoy cruising through the magnificent Glacier Alley with glacier after beautiful glacier reaching down to the sea. Then it's on to the Cockburn Channel which connects with the straight of Magellan.
