Overview

Amsterdam often referred to as the Venice of the north and has a storybook quality with is lovely canals and quaint architecture. No two houses are alike and it is a fun city to explore. The attractions are really too numerous to list here but guide books of things to do abound.


Amsterdam can easily assessable by foot or by bike or by boat. The city itself can be walked from end to end in about 30 to 40 minutes. Bikes easily outnumber cars in this city and can be rented very easily by tourists. Another charming way to tour the city is by boat. Boats tours offer a picturesque way to tour the city through the city's numerous canals.


Transportation

Amsterdam is an easy city to navigate. From the airport you can take the train, a shuttle or a shared taxi. Once within the central part of the city you can easily walk to where you want to go.


Sightseeing

Dam Square is considered the central square of the city and it is the home of impressive Royal Palace, the 14th century gothic style Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) and Madam Toussauds' Wax Museum. Dam Square is easily accessible to Centraal Train station, museums and shopping.


Various museums are a must see in Amsterdam and are located in the Museumplein section of the city. Recommended museums include the Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt House Museum, the Rijkmusuem (houses Dutch Masters paintings), and Anne Frank House.


Shopping - Amsterdam offers a variety of shopping on many of its streets. Dam Square and its surrounding streets are the hope of many designer and upscale shops. The most notable upscale shop, located at Dam Square, is known as De Bijenkorf or "the Beehive". De Bijenkorf is on par for shopping as Harrods of London. Any shopping trip in Amsterdam should include a trip to the Albert Cuypstraat Market. Among the many things to do in Amsterdam, a canal boat cruise aboard a glass-topped boat is a great way to see the gabled homes and picturesque bridges as well as the harbor.
