Icy Strait Point, the only private cruise ship destination in Alaska, provides visitors a less commercial alternative to some of Alaska's more famous port towns. Located on Chichagof Island, some 35 miles west of Juneau, Icy Strait Point is about a mile and a half from Hoonah, the largest Huna Tlingit settlement in Southeast Alaska. The Tlingit arrived on the island when Little Ice Age-fueled glaciers forced them from the Glacier Bay area, some 22 miles away across Icy Strait. Today, the Huna Totem Corporation owns Icy Strait Point, and profits directly support the local community. Some 80 percent of the staff are Tlingit from Hoonah.

Nature is on full display here.  The nutrient-dense waters around Icy Strait draw marine mammals, including humpback whales, to feed in the long summer days.  Eagles and Alaskan brown bears are plentiful, and lush green temperate rainforests cover the island.
