Motril is a port city in the province of Granada on Spain’s “Costa Tropical.” Set on the Strait of Gibraltar against the azure sea and backed by the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Motril has sub-tropical weather and beaches to match. The area also is known for its bountiful agriculture, including avocados, mangoes, peppers, and tomatoes. Historically, it was famous for its sugar production and today still has a rum distillery.

Importantly, Motril serves as the gateway to the famed city of Granada, about an hour away. Granada, the largest city of Andalusia, is a rich blend of European and Arab culture, as the city was under Moorish rule for 800 years.

The additional hour of travel tim each way from the port to Granada is well worth it. Take an excursion and tour the famous Alhambra Palace, which dates from Moorish times, and is considered the world’s most beautiful Arab fortress/palace complex. Stroll through courtyards, dazzling hallway, and luxurious gardens, and visit the art museum. If you have time, other sites to see in Granada include the Royal Chapel and the Cathedral of Granada, dating from 1521.There you can see the tombs of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. Other highlights include the monastery of San Jeronimo, the Alcaiceria shopping bazaar, and the Albaicin Quarter, the old Arab quarter, with its enchanting, winding streets, plazas, and fountains. Sample tapas or sip wine in the shade at a street cafe.

For those wishing to stay close to the port, there is plenty to do. Learn about Motril’s rich sugar history--the story of “sweet gold”--by exploring the Museo Preindustrial del Azucar (Sugar Museum). Tour the Bodegas Ron Montero rum distillery and try a sample. Birdwatch at Charca de Suarez, a critical coastal wetland for migratory birds.
