Seattle, Washington

Introduction

Seattle is located on Puget Sound and is one of the most stunning cities in the country. Seattle's nickname is the Emerald City because not only is it a jewel of a city but also due to the large number of evergreens throughout the region.

When most people think of Seattle, they think rain but it doesn't really rain as much as it does in other parts of the country. Seattle actually boasts one of the most livable climates in the world. Few residents own air conditioners or snow shovels and the growing season is typically around 11 months.

We recommend extending before or after your cruise to enjoy everything this city has to offer.

Port Orientation

Seattle has two cruise ship terminals as well as a cargo terminal - all in three different locations. Holland America ships embark and disembark at Seattle's newest cruise ship terminal at Pier 91 just north of downtown in the Magnolia neighborhood.

Transportation

Seattle is easy to get around and is very user friendly. Taxis are the easiest mode of transport but in the core downtown area travelers can take advantage of the free bus service, the monorail and waterfront trolly. Seatac airport is 18 miles south of downtown and there is light rail, metro busses, Supershuttle and an Airporter Bus service operated by Gray Line of Seattle. With cruise luggage taxi is generally the best option and with more than one person sharing the fare the cost is reasonable.

Sightseeing

Seattle has something for everyone. From its vibrant waterfront to the Seattle Center you will have plenty to do. In Seattle you can see the incredible views from atop the Space Needle, visit the Experience Music Project for an interactive journey through the history of music or explore Pike Place Market or historical Pioneer Square.

Pike Place Market is the oldest operating Farmer's Market in the States that is open continually. Here you can catch "the fish throwing guys", see the Original Starbucks, buy some fresh flowers, find amazing collectables, shop for yarn, grab a bite to eat and have your fortune told.

If time allows try to get out of downtown to experience some of Seattle many wonderful neighborhoods. There are not many large cities that do not have a Walmart within its limits but Seattle doesn't. It is because of the numerous neighborhood main streets with thriving small businesses that make 'big box' stores unnecessary.
