Stavanger, Norway

Introduction

Stavanger, Norway is the fourth-largest city in Norway with historic cobblestone streets and colorful houses. In old Stavanger you will find a cluster of over 170 small wooden houses that house, in part, craft shops, museums and galleries. As with other ports in this region of Norway, Stavenger is a National Heritage Site. From steep mountains to beautiful fjords, the landscape changes to afford beautiful views along the way to visiting the many attractions in and around Stavenger.


In the city center, Cruise ships dock which allows for a short walk to a lovely market place with ample possibilities for tax free shopping. Vikings were claimed to have gathered to one kingdom in Avaldsnes Karmoy, a short boatride from Stavenger, where Harald the Fairhair, the Viking King, built his first residence.


Port Orientation

The international ferry terminal has moved from central Stavanger to 15 km away to the west with the cruise ship terminal still located in the center of Stavanger. There is another terminal on the east side of the center where departures of local car ferries and other boats take place.


Transportation

There are many different modes of transportation so check at the pier to see what will work best for you. There is bus service between Stavenger and Tananger which stops at the terminal as well as the bus station.


Sightseeing

The possibilities for sightseeing in Stavenger are practically endless as one can take a number of boat trips to natural wonders such as Pulpit Rock, which is 1968 feet above seal level or to Avaldsnes Karmoy where a tour of the Viking King's house and tails of the Vikings' daily life are told. Or you can visit the medieval Utstein Abbey which requires a bus ride through an underseas tunnel or visit Stavanger Cathedral which is a smaller replica of Winchester Cathedral. A must see is the Norwegian Canning Museum which is one of a kind in the world. If you are interested in physical activity, you may chose to play golf, go on a cycle tour, take a fishing trip, swim with the salmon, go ocean rafting or scuba diving.
