Split grew up inside and around the colossal palace that the Roman Emperor Diocletian built as his retirement home around AD 305. Seventeen centuries later that palace is still the living core of the city - its ancient walls, cellars and courtyards now filled with homes, cafes, shops and churches. The whole historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture anywhere.

Croatian is the language and the euro is the currency. Beyond the palace walls, the palm-lined Riva promenade hums with life, the pine-covered Marjan hill rises above the old town, and a string of beautiful islands and historic towns lies within easy reach by boat or road.
