In this class students will learn the history, traditions, and how to knit a traditional Selbu Mitten. Selbu mittens, or Selbuvotter, are a traditional form of Norwegian knitted mitten originating from Selbu in Norway. Known for their intricate black and white patterns, they have become a symbol of Norwegian knitting heritage.
The Selbu mitten tradition began in the mid-19th century Knitting Selbu mittens involves specific techniques like the Norwegian thumb gusset, which creates a comfortable and well-fitting thumb. These mittens are more than just a piece of clothing; they represent Norwegian culture and craftsmanship. They are often handed down through generations and used in folk costumes.
Materials Needed ~ Selbu Mittens
- 50 gr of DK weight yarn in off white color ( 100% wool, nonsuperwash)
- 50 gr pf DK weight yarn in other contrast color of your preference( 100% wool, non-superwash)
- US 4 to 6 (3.5 mm to 4 mm ) knitting needles (dpn's or circular)
- stitch markers, tapestry needle
