Unlocking Color: Demystifying Variegated Yarn

Instructor: Tonia Lyons       Class Capacity: 25
Class Level: Beginner

Description ~ Unlocking Color: Demystifying Variegated Yarn

Variegated yarns are beautiful, expressive, and often a little mysterious. In this confidence-building class, you'll learn how to work with the color changes in hand-dyed yarns instead of fighting them, unlocking new possibilities in your yarn stash and turning every skein into a thoughtful, intentional project. We'll cover the basics of hand-dyed yarns and the terminology used to describe variegated colorways, helping you better understand what you're seeing before you ever cast on. You'll explore a wide range of stitch patterns and design ideas that pair well with variegated yarns and learn how different textures can enhance—or overwhelm—color changes. We'll also talk through the key factors to consider when choosing knitting patterns for variegated yarns, including stitch definition, scale, and overall project goals. By the end of the class, you'll feel more confident selecting patterns and techniques that highlight the beauty of your yarn.
