Description ~ Gansey Techniques

For those who have not taken Beth's Gansey class she's offering a special 9-hour class where students will learn how to construct a Gansey, a sweater form prevalent in the 19th century and early part of the 20th century among the fishermen of the British Isles and then start a KAL project to work on throughout the cruise. In the technique class, a small scale sweater will be knitted using traditional construction techniques including the classic Channel Island Cast-on, split welts, seam stitches, traditional knit/purl patterns, the underarm gusset, the perpendicular shoulder join, picked-up sleeves, and three choices for the collar. Alternative methods to these techniques will also be explored.

Description ~ The KAL Design Principles of the Gansey

In this 3 hour session, get started on knitting your gansey, the Big Easy. This class is being offered in conjunction with the Gansey Techniques class. (An alternative is the Musician Gansey which is simpler in patterning–both patterns use #4 yarn, an Aran weight yarn.) The pattern will be distributed and discussed, and suggestions made for adding in a different motif in the upper body of the Big Easy. The charts will be studied in class as well to be sure everyone understands the process.

The Antarctic Mittens Fingerless Mitts

Description ~ The Antarctic Mittens Fingerless Mitts

Knit one of a pair of mittens or fingerless mitts, complete with snowflakes or penguins, to learn the following techniques which can be applied to other garments: a cuff with braids (Estonian Vikkel or Swedish Herringbone), a choice of two- or three-color motifs, as well as the gussetless thumb and a picot edge (for the fingerless mitts) or a Norwegian Mitten tip (for the mittens) at the top. The handout has directions for a woman’s medium hand and a large hand.

Description ~ Top Down Aran Cardigans

This unusual type of Aran construction is controversial as to its historic authenticity. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating concept, which results in a stunning garment that is fun to knit. While knitting a small sampler sweater from the neck down, traditional pattern motifs will be worked , including bobbles, traveling stitches, knit/purl motifs, baby cables, background stitches, and more! The neckline studied will be shaped for a comfortable fit by utilizing increases and casting on extra stitches. This sampler is worked back and forth flat.
