Homer is known as the halibut fishing capital of the world and has also been dubbed the "Eco and Adventure tourism capital of Alaska."  Homer is literally at the end of the Sterling Highway, some 200 miles south of Anchorage. It was brought into popular notice as "the End of the Road" in Tom Bodett's stories.  Not only is Homer a great destination for wildlife sightings and wilderness recreation, Homer, surprisingly, has gained a reputation as a "foodie destination." Exquisite seafood and craft breweries–and even a winery–boost Homer's culinary reputation. Progressive cold-weather farming techniques have helped ensure Homer's success in micro-farming vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Homer even exports peonies, giving it another of its names, the "City of Peonies."
